Niger State Governor, Alhaji Abubakar Sani Bello has appealed to striking workers in the state owned tertiary institutions to return to work, as actions are being taken to address the agitations of the workers.
He made the appeal when he met with the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Hajiya Fatima Madugu, Chairman , Governing Board of the state owned Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University (IBBU), Lapai and its Vice Chancellor, Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare, in his office in Minna.
The meeting was part of the strategic moves by the Governor to resolve the industrial action embarked on by all the state owned tertiary institutions last Monday.
Governor Sani Bello said he has directed the office of the Head of Service and affected Ministries to meet with the labour leaders of unions with a view to addressing issues raised for solution.
He noted that the industrial action, especially by the academic staff of these institutions has adverse effect on the future of our youth in particular and the state in general.
Chatting with newsmen after the meeting, Commissioner for Education, Hajiya Fatima Madugu re-echoed the call on the striking workers to call off the strike and return to classroom.
She assured the striking workers that the governor and the government are committed to resolving the demands of the striking workers.
"Governor Abubakar Sani Bello is passionate about education and committed to meeting the demands of the striking workers. We have a responsible and responsive governor, I am appealing to our striking workers to call off their action and return to work.
"Government has since put machinery in motion to address the demands of the striking workers, hence various layers of meetings were and still being held on the governor's directives to resolve the industrial action".
The Vice Chancellor of Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida University, Lapai Professor Muhammad Nasir Maiturare also lend his voice of appeal to the striking workers, stressing that "the governor was kin at ensuring immediate resumption of academic activities in all our institutions in the state".
